CaO, calcium oxide. A white powdery
substance, it is used in making mortar and
cement and to reduce soil acidity. It is made
commercially by heating calcium carbonate,
CaCO3, obtained from limestone or chalk.
Quicklime readily absorbs water to become
calcium hydroxide (CaOH), known as slaked
lime.
