  1. CaO, calcium oxide. A white powdery
  2. substance, it is used in making mortar and
  3. cement and to reduce soil acidity. It is made
  4. commercially by heating calcium carbonate,
  5. CaCO3, obtained from limestone or chalk.
  6. Quicklime readily absorbs water to become
  7. calcium hydroxide (CaOH), known as slaked
  8. lime.
